A dental implant is basically a Titanium screw which is placed into the jawbone. Substantial research has been put into the subject of dental implants and many years ago it was determined that Titanium could actually integrate into the jawbone. This process is called ‘Osseo Integration’. In addition to the titanium, the BioHorizons implants have an exclusive Laser-Lok surface treatment shown to attract a true, physical connective tissue attachment. Laser-Lok is a series of precision-engineered cell-sized channels laser-machined onto the surface of dental implants.

Are dental implants the best treatment option
Implants are a great option to replace missing teeth because they can function as a real tooth. Another common option is to prepare a ‘dental bridge’ However, this involves cutting down the adjacent teeth next to the missing tooth site. This is can be a destructive way to fill in a missing tooth. Another option is to have a removable denture or partial denture. This can be a good option but many patients do not want a removable appliance as this is not like real teeth and they can be cumbersome. Implants are considered a good option because they are strong, have good esthetics, and last a long time. This treatment can be fantastic for people who have uncomfortable dentures and who hate being limited to easy to chew or softer foods. With dental implants, eating should be more pleasurable and teeth will be held firmly in place, making it easier to socialize with complete confidence. For people who lost teeth many years ago, replacing them with implant supported teeth can also help rejuvenate their appearance as often the dimensions between their upper and lower jaws will have been diminished by bone loss. Restoring the correct dimensions provides the proper support for cheeks and lips, helping to fill out fine lines and wrinkles.
Getting Started on the Treatment Process
The first step in the implant process is to have a consultation with Dr. Hawryluk. His office is located in the City of Mississauga (Port Credit Region).
He will discuss your specific situation and determine if implants are a good treatment option for you. Generally, dental implants can be used to treat most cases of tooth loss, but there are occasions when an alternative solution may be preferable. Then CT images are obtained and a guide is made to facilitate implant placement. Dr. Hawryluk uses Canaray Radiology Center for the CT scans and they are located close to his office.
What to Expect During Surgery
The actual procedure to insert a single dental implant is surprisingly quick and can be completed in as little as an hour. Dr. Hawryluk usually provides this treatment with local anesthetic and very mild sedation via Ativan Tablets. However, Dr. Hawryluk can also place the implant asleep. St. Lawrence Dentistry works with a team of Board Certified Medical Anesthesiologists to provide full sedation if this is desired. You should feel comfortable and relaxed during the implant placement procedure even if it is done awake. If working on a front tooth area, Dr. Hawryluk will also fabricate a temporary tooth replacement so you are not left with missing a front tooth at any time. Postoperative pain is generally mild and St. Lawrence Dentistry will keep in close contact with you during the healing process.
Completing Treatment
Full integration of the implants usually takes about 4 months. After the integration is complete Dr. Hawryluk will uncover the implants and take an impression of the implant by attaching an ‘impression coping’ to it. The impression is then taken to Dental Works Lab in Mississauga and they prepare the implant abutment and crown. This normally takes 2 weeks. When this is ready Dr. Hawryluk will screw the implant abutment and crown onto the implant and the process will be complete. He will ensure you are happy with the aesthetics and that the crown is fitting perfectly.
Looking after Your Implant Teeth
With the correct care, your implant teeth should last for many years but it is important to make sure you keep your dental implants clean. This is simple to do and your dental team can provide you with lots of information on how to brush and floss your dental implants or how to use other tools such as interdental brushes to keep them clean. It’s vital to keep up with your regular checkups and hygiene appointments, even if you have lost all your natural teeth as we can keep a close eye on your dental implants and your overall oral health.
