Should You Choose Dental Implants or Dentures?

Should You Choose Dental Implants or Dentures?

When you lose a tooth, or a few teeth for that matter, you will be presented with a few options for replacing these. Depending on whether or not you are eligible for it, one of the options you might find considering is a dental implant. Another option that you will also be presented with is the creation and use of dentures.

If you find yourself being presented with these two options, which would you choose? Which one do you think is best for you? The answer to the question as to which is better – dental implants or dentures – is something that people have been trying to figure out for some time now, although the decision is ultimately dependent on each case since not everyone can be considered eligible for one or the other.

Let’s just say that you are eligible for either restoration procedure, and you are at a crossroads as to which one you should choose. Let us weigh the pros and cons of each so you can make an educated choice when the time comes to decide.

Dental Implants

Pros

When you have dental implants, you can be sure that these won’t be moving around when you talk or when you chew since these are screwed into your jaw. These are also better for chewing can last a very long time if taken care of properly, and are so much like your original teeth.

Cons

Implants are pretty expensive, and some insurance companies won’t cover the cost of such a surgical procedure. Speaking of surgical procedures, if you have a fear of surgery, then this is not ideal for you either. Also worth noting is that these may take longer to get done than dentures, and there is a minuscule chance that your implant may fail as well.

Dentures

Pros

Dentures are pretty easy on the pockets when compared with other tooth restoration solutions. These are also pretty easy to maintain and can be made, fitted, and worn faster than implants.

Cons

Some of the things that most people complain about when it comes to dentures is the clicking noises these sometimes make when chewing, and when these slip when talking. Chewing can also be troublesome with dentures, and to make these stay in place, you have to use a denture adhesive, which can be rather tedious to use. You also need to remove these every night to ensure that these are cleaned properly, and so that your gums can rest as well.

Which Will You Choose?

With these pros and cons, you can easily see that the majority of the pros seem to lie with dental implants. The only thing you might need to worry about when it comes to implants is the cost. If you have healthy jaws and gums, and are not averse to invasive surgery, then the former may be your best option. If you have gum and jaw problems, then dentures may be your best bet.

No matter what teeth restoration procedure you opt for, know that your dentist will try to do what is best for your particular case. They will give you the kind of advice you need for this particular dilemma, and recommend the best option for your situation.
